Scholars Programme

A group of Y10 students were fortunate enough to be involved in the Scholars Programme in the Spring term. The students have been working with a PhD tutor on an aspect known as the ‘supra curriculum’. Brunts students were expertly guided by PhD tutor, Kiran Singh, on ‘Colonial identity in Midnight’s Children’ (by Salmon Rushdie). Initially the students were invited to Jesus College, Cambridge University, for the launch of the event where they received a tour of the campus, a careers workshop and an opportunity to undertake their first tutorial with Kiran Singh. Our students had a taste of what the future might hold for them, many were inspired by this visit and have ambitions to attend a Russel Group university. Subsequently the students attended weekly tutorials. Using their newfound knowledge, the students had to initially draft a 2000 word essay. Podium places for Brunts students!

Chelsea Price and Olivia Sheldon both gave an excellent performances at this year’s Everyone Active Lammas Leisure Centre spins, spirals and jumps skating competition this weekend. Both girls achieving podium places at this year’s event. Chelsea was awarded first place with her strong performance. Olivia was awarded 3rd place after an elegant skate in her section. It is a delight to see two talented skaters from the same school sharing the podium in the same event. Huge congratulations to them both.

Year 9 students are currently in the midst of completing their Bronze DofE award. Students have to complete 4 elements (3 months in each plus an extra 3 months in one of the elements): · Skill · Volunteering · Physical · Expedition The students have been training for their qualifying expedition since last year. They have all attended sessions after school developing the skills needed to ensure they can plan and complete a 2 day expedition whilst being self-sufficient. St John’s Ambulance delivered a first aid course covering everything from first aid kit content to treatment of common DofE injuries including blisters, sprains and burns to name a few! Students have also had the opportunity to practice cooking on a trangia, erecting a tent, map reading and using eDofE mapping software. The students undertook a training walk at Blidworth Bottoms in January before completing their practice expedition last half term. Harry Potter visit…

It was a truly magical experience for students in Year 7 and 8 who visited ‘Warner Bros Studios – The Making of Harry Potter’ on Friday 24th May. They were able to take a ride on a broomstick, experience the delights of Diagon Alley, visit Gringotts Wizarding Bank, stroll through Hogwart’s Great Hall, board the Hogwarts Express, buy wands and drink Butter beer. All the students were impeccably behaved and were a credit to the school.

Y10 Work Experience 2019

Thank you to all employers/providers for supporting our year 10 students with their work experience placements. They had a great week. A special thank you to Sam Handley at SPE and her team for enabling many of our year 10 students to do a work based learning day at her business on Monday 29th April.  She put a terrific informative programme in place for year 10 students and they also had a tour of the factory.  She also arranged  for our students to participate in workshops run by  Rolls-Royce and the Coal Authority as well as also running some for them.   A great day was had by all. Students enjoyed travel workshop sessions run by Ross Paradise and his team Travel Choice and Ride Wise at the Brunts Academy on Tuesday 30thApril.  This was an informative session that included bicycle maintenance and consideration of travel choices now and in the future. An Asian man in his 30s in a silver car (possibly an Audi /VW) was parked and behaving inappropriately. Scholastic book fair lands at Brunts!

During the 23rd-30th April the Scholastic book fair came to Brunts Academy. The English department facilitated KS3 visits to the fair where students were able to browse, engage and purchase a range of books and stationary. The fair was successful, raising £385. As a result we will receive £160 of scholastic book vouchers which we can use to purchase more texts for enrichment and reading club activities.  Special thanks goes to Mrs Simpson for organising the event. Non Uniform Day

This Friday, 3rd May we are holding a non-uniform day to raise funds for four of our Sixth Form students who are working out in Cambodia this summer.  They are travelling out in July for four weeks, to work on a range of projects including - building rain water jars, tending jungle gardens, local school aid, building toilets and wells. As well as this non uniform day they are raising funds by taking part in the "3 Peaks Challenge" and selling donuts in school each Friday. The Brunts Academy 4–2 All Saints  Brunts won 4–2 last night in horrendous weather conditions. A fantastic headed goal by J. Martin from a delightful J. Tuft cross set the tone for the game. Goals from A. Lilliman and F. Blackwell made it 3-0 before half time. After the break All Saints hit back with two goals before J. Wisniewski sealed the result.  The team play Samworth Academy on Monday in the Town Cup Quarter Final. Well done to all involved.

The Nepal students coordinated two very successful fundraising events this week at The Brunts Academy. On Wednesday, year 7’s and 8’s had the opportunity to take part in an Easter egg hunt, and Friday they put on a Eggcellent Easter bake sale. County Athletics Results

A huge well done to our Girls Sportshall Athletics team and our Boys Sportshall Athletics team who represented the Mansfield District yesterday at Harvey Hadden competing at the County event having qualified at Manor two weeks ago. Some highlights include the girls team taking 1stplace in the 8 lap parlauf as well as the girls team taking 2ndplace in the 4x2 lap relay. The boys team took 2nd place in their relay and the 2 lap race. The girls team finished 4th out of all the District school champs and the boys team finished 7th. The students represented the academy and the district very well showing lots of ambition and endeavour.

Rosslyn Park Rugby 7’s has come to an end for another year. The Year 9 team have encompassed all our core values to compete in the nation’s prestigious competition. They have demonstrated ambition in abundance and lots of resilience to bounce back against a high standard of competition. Dancers to visit Ukraine!

Brunts students Amelia Brymer, Gabriella Beardsley, Sinead Kinnear and Leah Woodward have been selected to travel to KIEV, UKRAINE for 5 days in April 2019.  Expressions Dance Academy tutor,  Tatiana Tretyakova previously a soloist in the Bolshoi Ballet, has selected the top pupils to travel to the Ukraine to train at at the World renowned Ukraine Academy of Pop and Circus Arts in Kiev, responsible for training some of the top artists in Cirque du Soleil world wide. The youngsters will train for 5 days in dance, gymnastics, acrobatic and aerial arts (hoop and silks) in the purpose built Academy. They will receive full certification at the end of the trip of their training. This is a fabulous opportunity for these youngsters who are now fundraising to raise any additional funds they can to help with this trip. Match report from today's game. Brunts 33-0 Mount Kelly The Year 9 Brunts Academy rugby team have made an explosive start to the Rosslyn Park 7’s with a 33-0 victory over Mount Kelly. Jacob Hutchinson went round the outside to score the first try of the game. An outstanding performance by Freddie Blackwell who scored a brace and chipped in with three conversions. NIDAS - Nottinghamshire Independent Domestic Abuse Services will be hosting a parent support group at Brunts on: Wednesday 24th April, 11-1pm at The Brunts Academy (DT6) NIDAS are a small, friendly and independent local charity working across Mansfield and Ashfield in Nottinghamshire. They offer a family based approach for people who are living with or have experienced any form of domestic violence or abuse. They have a team of highly experienced and qualified workers who have supported 1,000’s of families to live a life free from harm. If you or anyone you know needs some advice, support and guidance then please get in touch. Year 9 and 10 Netball Success Fantastic evening of Netball at Manor school this week. Both year 9 and 10 students represented the school in the Final Netball Central Venue League of the season. Both teams played two games against Samworth and All Saints results are below. A big thank you to both Misha and Sophie who represented both year groups as the year 10 team were short of players. British Championships for Daisy!

On the 23rd of February, Daisy competed at the English Age Group Championships in weightlifting, having qualified in December for a placing at the competition. In Daisy’s words, "a large room was set up with two lifting platforms to accommodate all athletes". Overall in her category, there were 14 other girls who she competed against to qualify for the next stage in the competition which is ‘The British Championships’ in October 2019. Daisy had to attempt 6 lifts in total, 3 lifts known as the ‘snatch’ and 3 clean and jerk lifts with ascending weights that Daisy could pick according to her ability. Daisy ended up hitting 5/6 lifts with a combined total of 88kg to qualify for the British Championships which will be held in October. Daisy is currently sitting in 5th position in the country which I know she is really happy with. A huge well done to Daisy and good luck at The British Championships.

Year 7 students showed fantastic resilience in the MACUP Final last night against Ashfield. They beat Ashfield 1 – 0 after a fantastic long range free kick from Charlie Milner. Their efforts were exceptional.  They really worked as a team to ensure that their deserved lead was not lost. The boys represented the Academy - showcasing our core values and were a credit to themselves.

The Year 8 Girls and Boys Sportshall Athletics teams competed at Manor Academy on 19th March aiming to qualify for the County Champs. Both teams represented the Academy extremely well showing ambition to do their best in all events. We gained 1st place finishes in numerous events including 4x2 lap relay, vertical jump and 8 lap parlauf. As a result, both teams will now represent the Mansfield District at the County Champs held at Harvey Haddon on 3rd April. A huge well done to all students who competed.

Heidi Marriott in Year 9 has achieved huge success in this year's Nottinghamshire Swimming Club Championships. 1st in 200m backstroke and 200m individual medley 2nd in 100m backstroke 4th in 50m backstroke This takes her to 4th in the country in her age group and she is on track to compete at the European Swimming Championships in Glasgow later this year. Excellent results!

Brunts Year 7 football team have qualified for the Year 7 Mansfield Schools Football Festival Cup on Thursday 21st March. They finished top of their group with two wins and a draw which set up a semi-final game with a strong Holgate side. The boys ran out 2.0 winners after a fantastic display. A brilliant team performance meant that the team didn’t concede a goal in the four matches that they played. Well done to all students involved.

All Year 11 French and German students have their last speaking mock next week (w/c 18th March). They should be revising their general conversation answers this weekend thoroughly. This mock will be their last opportunity to receive some individual feedback and advice for this skill, worth 25% of their GCSE.  Any reminders or testing and support of revision time at home this weekend will help their confidence and ensure that the feedback is useful and focused on improving for their final exam.

Brunts Year 7 and 8’s CVL Netball Final

Last night the year 7 and 8 girls played in the final central venue league games. Year 7 finished 3rd overall winning the bronze school games medals. Year 8 Football

Well done to the Year 8 football boys who represented Brunts in the Year 8 MACUP at Sutton Lawn winning the league winning 2, drawing 1 and losing 1, to go through to the semi-finals. In the semi finals they came up against Joseph Whittaker with the result at fulltime 0-0. On to the pentaly shootout with the best of 3, Noah Szczesny saving the final penalty to send Brunts through to the Final on 22nd March.

World Book Day

To celebrate World Book Day this year, we will be offering students the chance to come to school dressed up as a recognisable book character on Friday 8th March. There will be a fancy dress competition held in the Sports Hall at lunchtime where teachers will judge the students' costumes and pick a number of winners who shall receive prizes. This will not be a non-uniform day and those students not wearing fancy dress will be expected to come in their normal school uniform.
